Daikon Salad with Green Onion and Chili Pepper



Daikon is a very inexpensive traditional Chinese vegetable, abundant in most Chinese grocery stores year round. This is a very popular daikon salad recipe in Chinese cuisine. I added Thai chili to give it a hot kick, you can skip the Thai chili if you prefer a mild flavor. This is a great side dish for any occasions.


Ingredients
  • 1 lb. Fresh daikon (available in most Chinese grocery stores)
  • 1 tablespoon canola oil
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 pinch of sugar
  • 1 green onion 
Preparation Time:  10 minutes (with 1 hour marinate time)
Cooking Time: 5 minutes
Servings: 4

Cooking Steps

1. Get 1 lb. Daikon, rinse clean, use a knife to peel the skin, cut into very thin and narrow slices. Add 1 teaspoon salt, toss evenly to marinate for 1 hour.


2. Get 1 green onion, rinse clean, cut into small bits. Below is about 1 cup of green onion bits.


3. Get a few fresh Thai chili pepper, rinse clean, cut into small bits.
Tip: Thai pepper can be very hot, use portions to your taste.
4. Add 1 tablespoon canola oil to a clean wok, use medium heat to warm the wok, add the green onion and chili pepper bits to the oil, let the oil fry for 1 or 2 minutes or until the aroma comes out.
5. Turn off the heat, let the wok cool down, use hand to squeeze water out of the marinated daikon slices. Add the daikon slices to the wok, add a pinch of sugar, mix all ingredients evenly.
